This is way over due, and I started my official Twitter account more than a month ago, but I want to say it anyway in an official blog post:
And the MyQuietFI Twitter account is live!
Hahahaha… yep, it still felt good.
Check out the twitter feed on the sidebar of this page and feel free to follow me. I’m not going to lie; I was pretty stoked when I figured out how to put that up there! It makes me smile when I can celebrate these little WordPress victories of design. Haha… slowly but surely this site is beginning to look a bit more like a legitimate blog!
Here’s to the tiny victories in life. =)
How much, is too much social media?
It has been a long time since I have been on social media and I have mixed feelings about it. For the blog I’m excited to be on Twitter, since I look at this as an opportunity to connect with other bloggers and expand my FIRE horizon.
But regarding my personal social media accounts I have been taking a break. I was never one of those people who was addicted to the status updates or what their friends were up to. I wasn’t online all that much either, but when I was, it just seemed like I didn’t get that much value from it. People only post half of their lives on FB and Instagram – the glamorous version without all the blemishes that make life so beautiful and complex. It’s nice to be able to see what adventures people may be up to, but I find it more like watching a reality TV Show – some edited facade that has a soundtrack playing in the background. And I get it, of course it is what you make of it and how you manage your own personal relationships. But I still wonder sometimes if the overall effect of social media on society is a net positive or negative?
Then I start thinking about kids growing up on screens. What is that doing to their eyes and physical development? It only took me a few years after college of staring at a computer screen daily before I was blind. Plus, the online bullying is crazy. Thank God there weren’t smart phones when I was in high school. You make one mistake at some party and then it’s captured forever on an iPhone in social media. I think we’re still only dealing with the tip of the iceberg in regards to what the real effect of kids growing up in this digital age will be.
Will data rights be the next big political face-off?
The main reason I took my digital hiatus was after all the FB scandals with data privacy. If you haven’t seen the Netflix documentary, “The Great Hack,” you might not want to. It’s one of those movies where once you see behind the curtain there’s no going back – ignorance can be bliss on occasion.
Hahaha… Enough of the conspiracy angle… This is a positive blog, so we’ll shift to the benefits.
With all that being said, I have no issue with using social media for its positives and connecting with the world. I just find that when I’m using it, the time seems to fly by, and I really haven’t done that much except stare at a screen. It literally kills my productivity. My wife’s big on Instagram, but I haven’t really tinkered around with it too much. Maybe that will be in the blog’s future some distant day when the anonymity goes away, or if I make it that far.
I haven’t started the MyQuietFI FB account yet for the reasons mentioned above, but most likely it will be coming at some point since I know that is expected of blogs nowadays. Oh Zuckerberg… Even I must bow down to the powers that be. But for now, I’m going to play around with Twitter and get more acquainted. I was originally thinking of trying something like posting 30 days in a row to get me in the habit, but I stopped after less than a week. It still feels a little weird doing tweets… hahaha… I feel like such a dated person when I type stuff like that.
The other thing about Twitter is, holy shit there are a lot of FI bloggers and information out there! I’ve been a little insulated by only reading the blogs I like and scanning the news sites sporadically for recent FIRE content, but man, you can get lost in the Twitterverse in no time. After I set up my account, I was looking around and I think a whole hour flew by without me even realizing it. I was just looking at all the postings on the FI subject and Bam! Time slipped right past me like sand through an hour glass.
Well, that’s all for now. This one was short and sweet.
Go out there and be productive with your day and follow me on Twitter! I think I have a total of 17 followers as of this typing! Ahahaha! Taking over the world one twitter follower at a time!
Baby steps my friends, baby steps…
